Pray First

As this new year begins, more than ever before, we want the Bridge Church family to become a people of prayer. May our rally cry become, “Pray First.” In every situation, whether good or bad, we will commit to pray before we act. Instead of acting first before turning to God, prayer should be our first response, not our last resort.

However, understanding the necessity of prayer is not enough.

In order for it to become a part of our life, it needs to become something we look forward to. I’m convinced most people don’t enjoy prayer because they have never been taught how to pray. That’s what we hope to change in 2024!  When you discover the beauty of daily conversation with Him, you’ll experience the presence of God that will change your life.

Once you learn how to pray, prayer can become a part of everyday life.

And then…
Before the day begins —
Before you go to bed —
Before you go to work or school —
Before you send that text —
Before you react —
Before bad things happen —
Before you eat, drive, or travel —

In every situation — PRAY FIRST!

During this 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting, we are going to focus on PRAYING THE SCRIPTURES.

For each day, we have provided a Scripture for the day, and have offered a sample prayer, to help you claim the promises of that verse through prayer. You can make this as personal as you like. You will find the most benefit when you pray the Scriptures that God is showing you in His Word and that are connecting with you personally in your current season of life.

For even greater benefit, we encourage you to invest 10 minutes on a journaling exercise called “S.O.A.P.

S – Scripture (write out the verse of the day)
O – Observation (What jumps out to you from the verse? What does it mean to you?)
A – Application (How can you specifically put into practice what you have read?)
P – Prayer (share a brief prayer to God—of response, of gratitude, of confession, etc)

Some people prefer writing in an actual (paper) journal, or you can certainly also record your journal entry in the “Notes” app on your phone, your laptop, or some other electronic device.  Simply do whatever works best for you!  The more you enjoy the process, the more likely you will be to continue this life-giving spiritual discipline. These next 21 days will be amazing!

GROWING TOGETHER in our faith and purpose,

Pastors David & Michele

Day 1

SCRIPTURE:
I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

PRAYER:
“As our church begins 21 days of prayer and fasting, I pray for those in leadership. I ask that you would guide the men and women that lead our nation, our state, our jobs, and our schools. Give them supernatural wisdom as they make decisions that not only affect me but my family, my friends, and my neighbors. Help me to know that you hold the world in your hands, regardless of who is in authority. Guide my own thoughts and prayers so that my life might be marked by godliness.”

Day 2

SCRIPTURE:
But Jesus told him, No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ (Matthew 4:4)

PRAYER:
“Father, what a gift your word is. You’ve also given me the gift of your Spirit, leading me to understand what your Word says and means. Instill deep within my soul a hunger and thirst for what I need spiritually. Make me desperate to hear your still, small voice as I’m led according to your word.”

Day 3

SCRIPTURE:
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

PRAYER:
“Father, I ask that you remove any lies I’ve clung to from the enemy that make me rely on my own strength instead of yours. I pray that I may begin to live more confidently and fully each day while intentionally resting in you and that by your Spirit, You would help me walk in the new, redeemed life Christ set me free for.”

Day 4

SCRIPTURE:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

PRAYER:
“Father, I know Jesus is the perfect example of what it means to live for you. I give you my sin and my struggles today. I look to you, Jesus, because you lived and died for me! Help me to live with your same joy and endurance. Surround me with your people so we might help each other pursue you well.”

Day 5

SCRIPTURE:
‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. (Romans 12:1)

PRAYER:
Lord, my life belongs to you. Help me to examine how I might live a life of holy sacrifice to you. I ask that you show me what I’ve been holding onto so tightly that has kept me from truly worshiping you. Use and mold me as you please, Jesus.

Day 6

SCRIPTURE:
Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. (Hebrews 12:28)

PRAYER:
“Today I’m thankful you are wonderful, powerful, gracious, all knowing, and loving. I could sing your praises forever. Help me to look to you more often so my faith and love for you will never grow complacent. Help me to remember your unshakable Kingdom when things don’t go my way. When I’m caught up in my own mess I ask that you remind me how mighty you truly are.”

Day 7

SCRIPTURE:
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. (Galatians 5:1)

PRAYER:
“Lord, thank you for calling me, saving me, and restoring me. You restored me from sin and gave me life, forgiveness, hope and peace.I pray that you would help plant my feet firmly in the freedom you won and keep my eyes fixed on you.”

Day 8

SCRIPTURE:
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7)

PRAYER:
“Father, I know You have not given me a spirit of fear or timidity, but one of power, love, and self-discipline. When my mind feels out of control, I pray that You will renew my spirit and let power, love, and self-discipline fill me. Help me look more like You every day. With confidence that Your power lives in me, give me boldness to confront the enemy and anything I see in the world that does not reflect Your heart. Thank You for breaking the spirit of fear off my life, and I receive the truth that You have given me a sound and healthy mind.”

Day 9

SCRIPTURE:
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. (Philippians 2:12-13)

PRAYER:
“Father, I know it’s you who works in me to accomplish your good purposes. I also understand that it’s you who changes me to be more like your son, Jesus. I pray I’ll have a renewed daily passion for knowing you even after this fasting journey ends. I pray that by your Spirit, I will prioritize my relationship with you and make living in your presence the goal of my life.”

Day 10

SCRIPTURE:
Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge. (Psalms 62:8)

PRAYER:
“Father, in Your Word You invite me to pour out my heart to You. You are my refuge, and I know that anything I think, feel, or do is okay to bring to You. Knowing that You are a safe place for me, I come to You and give You everything on my heart (talk to God about the specific things that are on your heart today). From what is worrying me to what is delighting me, for what I hope for to what I’m afraid of, I bring it all to You because I know I can trust You. Help me and guide me in every area, in Jesus’ name.”

Day 11

SCRIPTURE:
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.  (Psalms 34:18)

PRAYER:
“Lord, I pray for those who are hurting or far from you. I pray that you would help others realize that you’re right there, closer to them than they could imagine. I ask that you would use me to lift those whose spirits are crushed. Help me to bring joy to the brokenhearted.”

Day 12

SCRIPTURE:
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. (John 15:4)

PRAYER:
“Lord, thank you for your promise to be with us always. I ask that you would give me the strength to remain faithful to you. I submit to you because I know that I’m not strong enough or good enough on my own. Whatever fruit I might produce is nothing compared to what you could do through me. Help me to remain in you and take hold of your promises.”

Day 13

SCRIPTURE:
Come near to God and He will come near to you. (James 4:8)

PRAYER:
“Heavenly Father, You have promised that if I draw near to You, You will draw near to me. I need more of Your presence today, and I am drawing near to You through prayer, worship, and reading Your Word. I open my heart to You and ask You to be near to me and change me to be more like You.”

Day 14

SCRIPTURE:
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10)

PRAYER:
God, I thank you for creating me, for making me your masterpiece. Help me to daily dwell on this truth and allow it to shape my identity. Help me to believe every day the truth of who you made me to be: your handiwork.”

Day 15

SCRIPTURE:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

PRAYER:
“Father, my heart feels anxious (tell God what is giving you anxiety). I don’t like this feeling, but I’m thankful I can come to You and receive peace. You invite me to replace my anxiety with prayer, and even though my mind and heart are racing, I’m coming to You knowing that You provide healing and calm for my soul. Thank You for giving me breath and life. I thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made in Your image. I lay down all worries, all my physical and mental anxiety, and any attempt at trying to control it all (tell Him the things you are laying down right now). I surrender it all to You. I need You. I need Your peace that transcends my human understanding. Even if things are unstable around me, I pray that Your peace will be evident in my heart and my life. Guard my heart and mind, God. I trust that You are faithful, and I receive Your peace in my life today.”

Day 16

SCRIPTURE:
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalms 51:10-12)

PRAYER:
“Lord, I desire purity. I want a pure heart, soul, and mind. Forgive me for the moments that I have defiled that purity. Please renew your steadfast spirit within me – help me to faithfully pursue the things that align with your heart. Please make the reality of Jesus’ work on the cross real in my heart.”

Day 17

SCRIPTURE:
For God is so wise and so mighty. Who has ever challenged him successfully? “Without warning, he moves the mountains, overturning them in his anger. He shakes the earth from its place, and its foundations tremble. If he commands it, the sun won’t rise and the stars won’t shine. (Job 9:4-7)

PRAYER:
“I pray for those who not only don’t know you but would’ve never even heard the good news of your wisdom and heart and your might and strength. I ask that you would help all of us sit in awe of you. Grow my fear of you. I ask that you would build my faith around your great works and your proven character.”

Day 18

SCRIPTURE:
The LORD is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does. The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.  (Psalms 145:13-14)

PRAYER:
“Almighty God, as I claim the promises in Your Word through my prayer time, I praise You for Your character. Trustworthy, faithful—that is who You are. I thank You that I can trust You to be faithful to me. I know that when I come to You with humility and a surrendered heart that You will lift me up.”

Day 19

SCRIPTURE:
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalms 139:13-14)

PRAYER:
“Lord, in moments of insecurity and self-doubt, help me to remember the intentionality you took when you created me. Remind me how thoughtful you were with every detail. Help me to find confidence in who I am.”

Day 20

SCRIPTURE:
For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. (Proverbs 2:6-8)

PRAYER:
Father, I ask for an abundance of wisdom today. I pray that you would guide my every thought, that you would guide my every action. I ask that you would protect me and my family as I fight for a life of integrity! Living the way that you call us to isn’t always the easiest, but I know that through your wisdom and gentle nudges it can be done. Give me the courage to do what is right, just, and faithful.”

Day 21

SCRIPTURE:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.  (Galatians 6:9-10)

PRAYER:
“Lord, I thank you today for this promise that my labor is never in vain.  As you promised, I will reap a harvest for doing good, as long as I don’t give up.  You know me better than anyone, so you know that sometimes I just want to give up.  My prayers don’t seem to be working.  My labor appears to be in vain.  Other people (who aren’t living for you) seem to be doing better than me, even though I’m trying to put your first in my life.  Nonetheless, it is important for me to learn the principle of sowing and reaping.  Whatever I sow, I will also reap. Therefore, I will keep working hard for you…and then trusting you with the results.  Living this way is easier said than done…but I ask you to help me, and I know that you will!”
